Bought a rose bush in a pot for 50p!

From my local florist.  It's a tiny thing!

But now I'm not sure what to do with it.  It has pink buds on it and it looks fairly healthy.  So do I plant it out now and hope it survives a frost?  Or do I keep it indoors in the warm until the Spring?

Coming from a florist suggests to me it might be an indoor 'miniature' rose, which are often given as gifts.  Those aren't very hardy and need a fair bit of care to keep healthy.  Some info. here:

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Ah!  I was not aware there was any such thing.  Thank you!

I had some of them given to me. After flowering last year I put them out if sight in a sheltered spot.
They did ok -sort of - the odd flower, but I did neglect them.
I think they deserve a little tlc next year.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • The link said it needs full sunlight for most of the day so I've put it on my living-room window sill which faces South.

I'm sorry to appear a touch contrary, but roses of all types, even ones like these you have,  do not make good houseplants, and they should be kept outside for as long as possible, only brought in during freezing conditions... they need sun, light, air, and rain on them.. a windowsill is not the place for a rose of any sort... you will only get loads of whitefly and then resort to sprays, and the rose will deteriorate..

If you can pot up into a larger pot and place outside, for as much of the year as you can depending on the weather... or if you have a greenhouse...

Here are some of mine, I change them every couple of years and get new ones, different colours etc... I enjoy them in the greenhouse, except during summer weather, they go outside then... I don't spray, they get hosed down if infested with anything..

    do enjoy your little roses...

  • Ok, it is now out on the back step in the wind and the sunshine until I work out what to do with it.

  • And BTW, I'm an organic gardener.  I don't spray anything.

I'm delighted to hear that Laura... there's really no need for all these sprays...

  • I'm pleased to see this thread as I was going to ask a similar question. I bought two miniature rose plants from the M&S reduced shelf in July.  They looked terribly sad but were in a nice zinc container down from £10 to £1 so it would have been rude not to take them :)
The label said to put them outside in the sun in their pots and to plant them out in the summer.  They flowered beautifully but I never got round to planting them out and was wondering what to do next.
I think I might put them into one bigger pot together, keep them somewhere relatively sheltered for now and then pop them in the greenhouse or cold frame if the winter looks harsh.  That will give me time to decide which bed they might go into next year.
No longer newish but can't think of a new name so will remain forever newish.  B)

  • Oh shoot!  You just reminded me.  I'd better fetch them in.  Although it is going to be warm tomorrow so I don't think we are going to have a frost.  I haven't got my heating on and I'm only wearing one layer.

Ah.  I've left the washing out as well....  :D
