poorly rose

hi,

Earlier this year, in April, we had to cut our climbing rose down the ground.
During the spring and summer
It only managed to show 3 flowers and a huge amount of long leggy growth.
Will it survive until next year or should I prune it back quite hard.

Many thanks
EA

Hard to say without seeing any photos of it.
Many factors could be troubling it - exposure, soil, overhanging trees, how delicate that variety is...
    Which climbing rose it it?
  • Hi,
I believe it is a David Austen St. Swithens climber.
No overhanging trees, but next door neighbours have erected a 6ft.
    solid fence.

So did your rose stop performing after you pruned it in April, or when the fence went up?
If it's lacking light, you may be looking at moving it...now is a good time to do that.

St Swithin is a vigorous, repeat flowering climber, isn't it?
I believe it likes full sun too.
I wonder if it became leggy because it was reaching towards the light?
If and when I have pruned in early spring, I've always given my climbers a good feed and I top dress with farmyard manure in spring too, for all my roses.
