lemon tree in winter

My 2 lemons (one new this year one 4 years old) have sat on the balcony all summer but now its time to move them indoors.. My situation is different this year because we have moved and do not have a conservatory.
I'm not sure where to move them to. Not into the house - too warm, not into the garage which is in darkness most of the day and night but can i move them to a cold, unheated greenhouse?

Sounds like you'll have to.   Can you get some bubble wrap sheets form the local GC or DIY to line the greenhouse to insulate it and maybe some horticultural fleece to make a further tent inside that but allow for air circulation?

You can also put bubble wrap around the pot to protect the roots form heavy frost but not over the plant or the compost as it needs to breathe.

My pleasure.  I have 3 to nurse myself - Meyer lemon, Limquat and a baby Yuzu.

  • Limquat - is that like a lime kumquat? Is it good to eat?

Yes and yes altho I don't try and eat one whole and raw like I would a kumquat.    I grate the zest and then squeeze the juice for Thai dishes.   Lots of pips but also lots of juice given the size.   Lovely blossom too.
