Please could someone identify this ?

My MIL was going to throw this away, so I have grabbed it ! It looks a bit like an acer, but it is apparently some kind of perennial. She says it hasn't flowered but there is an old dead flower bud at the top.Looks like it has been badly scorched. Can anyone help please?

    Maybe a variety of peony? They turn lovely autumn red colours this time of year.

    Agree, peony.  They don't do well in pots so that's likely why it didn't flower properly.  Plant it in the ground if you can, no deeper than it is in the pot.
    A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    Thank you all @Perki ,@ bijdezee and @BobTheGardener for the response ! Am l right in guessing it's not too keen on full sun ? If so it may have to be a larger, deeper pot. My mum is unable to garden anymore, but loves peonies, so if l can rescue this......

    Bumping this  to ask if anyone could give me some idea of peony type please ? I really want to give this a good chance if l can  :)

    Herbaceous peonies like full sun.   You won't know which one it is till it flowers and that depends on planting depth.  Too deep and you bury the flower buds so they don't mature.  Too shallow and they get scorched and don't develop.

    Thanks @Obelixx, full sun is not a problem for me ! I will have a mooch around the garden tomorrow and see what space l can find. I dug out a cornus lst week and moved a few things, so hopefully l can find somewhere suitable. I will also get it out of the pot and have a look at the state of the roots etc. Thanks again  :)

    It's the first peony l've ever grown, let alone revived. I was surprised by the colour as l was expecting the usual dark red.
