Bog standard summer geraniums

CopperdogCopperdog Posts: 617
I have some the summer non hardy geraniums on pots on the window sill outside and want to take them out for winter skimmias and heathers.  I have usually composted them but would like to try and save them for next year.  How do I do this?  Do they become leggy or are they worth saving?  thanks

Zonal pelargoniums can be dug up and overwintered frost free, keeping the soil on the dry side. If you do not have room for the whole plant, cut it down to make it smaller. Use the cut off shoots as cuttings to increase your stock. If you are really short of space, cuttings can be overwintered on a windowsill.

Pot them up and bring them indoors and keep them on a sunny windowsill ... they may even flower for you. When you pot them up you can cut them back, using the bits you remove as cuttings.
