Why are all measurements in metric and not Imperial. I have to resort to tape measure every time to see what proper measurement is. Very annoying

We  brits  went metric a long time ago. Are you in one of the former colonies?
  • Yes it's called Yorkshire

Separate country. I know it well. I wish they would sort out the M1 around Sheffield.

I'm fortunate that metric came in while I was still in school, so I can do both.
Often during the same project... ;)
The liquid measures are more tricky for me.
I find it amusing that joiners will say 'that comes in either 2.4 metres, or 3.6, and you can get it in 4 by 2 [inches]  :D

    Oh don't get me started...…...
  • It would be ok by me to use Metric, if we did it properly, but there seems to be an insistence on giving measurements in ridiculous numbers of millimetres instead of using centimetres!
And we still use miles, so presumably ought to know how many yards that is?

    1,760 ...
B'cupdays - my ex hubby is a quantity surveyor, and I asked him about the millimetre thing. He said it's because of the accuracy required in building works, and on the drawings etc. If something's a few mm out, the knock on effect can be huge, which makes sense.
    B*oody annoying though  :D
I'm getting better at the kilometre measurements, although I still convert to miles, and parts thereof, because in my head I can visualise that more easily. Hills are often done in metres, but I like heights in feet, so when I have a long slog up to a summit, and I've not converted it on a route map,  I often try and work out the height in feet as I go to keep me focused.
    How sad is that?  :D
I use an online conversion site as well.  ;)

I use Fahrenheit to measure how hot the weather is and Celsius is much more satisfying to measure how cold it is.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

I use both systems quite happily but not both at once.   Most stuff here is, naturally, measured in metric but hose pipe diametres are in fractions of inches as are some pipes for plumbing.   I have recently signed up for some patchwork classes using a sewing machine as opposed to hand sewing and that happens in eights of an inch because the teacher gets her inspiration form US sources.  Having been decimal all her life she has no idea that we say 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4s and not 2, 4 or 6/8ths.
