Lawn revival after drought

Our lawn turned very brown over the summer, bits have come back but some has not.  Looks awful.  I’ve just acquired a scarifier (rake type) and tried to use it..it’s quite savage!  My plan was to scarify the lot, green and brown bits and seed all of it to avoid a patchy look because reseeded areas tend to look so different.  My question is should I aim to eradicate every bit of brown or just churn up the surface.  I’m not sure what I’ve got is technically “thatch” or not.  Any tips?  Please!!

    Might be best to post a photo. Brown patches may just be a thatch build up. Other times, it could be it's compacted and needs spiking and then a scarify to allow the grass to grow back. Either way, any scarifying will help first. But if that doesn't help to revive your lawn, then you should spike it allow water and air in.

    Just get rid of some, it should all grow back next year of not before.

    You want to see some soil so the new seed has something to bind to.
