I have now taken some pictures of my Clematis Montana Grandiflora as mentioned above.  They are vigorous plants - but I am hoping the allotted space will be sufficient for it as I twist it around each support daily. This may be of interested to you Thomas
  • Thanks all.

That looks great, Guernsey Donkey! Love your pots too.

Before replanting, I should want to know what's gone wrong with your Clematis because it looks dead to me.. but if you still want a montana variety, you might like to seek out this one, cutely named Clematis montana 'Wee Willie Winkie'... it's much less rampant than others, and I easily managed to contain this on a 6 x 6 foot trellis.... lovely scent of vanilla wafting by..  it won't eat your house..

...this is clematis 'Francis Rivis', an alpina, with 'Markham's Pink' [macropetala]..

    ..this is clematis 'Propertius'..[macropetala hybrid]..

I planted a Clematis montana "Mayleen" in front of a 4ft high wall, which was topped with a 5ft fence with trellis top (big ground level difference between us and next door). It was lovely with a beautiful fragrance but within a couple of years just went berserk, topped the fence easily, grew over the other side into next door's shrubs and got really top heavy. I then couldn't reach it to prune the top and when the fence needed replacing, I took the tough decision to take it out - right plant, wrong place. Montanas can be monster clematis Thomas, I too, think it's too big a plant for beside your front door.

Thank you! I like the Francis Rivis and think it would like nice with the Gertrude Jekyll (I’m going to persist with trying to grow a clematis through it). There’s a few sites which sell it online. Is now a good time to order one and plant it?
