Lily of the Incas...Alstroemeria help!

Hi
I have purchased two plants online in memory of my recently lost dog Inca. I am a novice gardener. When they arrive can I plant them straight into a sunny spot in the garden? What compost should I use, or are the better to stay sheltered in pots until after winter?
Thank you!

Hi Cat - what size of plants are you expecting?
Small plants can sometimes get 'lost' in the ground over winter, even tough plants. If the plants aren't in at least a 6 or 7 inch pot, and filling it well, I'd be inclined to keep them somewhere sheltered until spring. It's one of those things that is down to judgement, and knowing your climate and conditions, so better safe than sorry if you're less experienced. It would be a shame to lose them  :)
You can pot them into slightly bigger pots if they have a good root system, then put them near a house wall or similar. It will just protect them from the worst of the elements. Then you can plant out once the temps are going up and things are starting to grow.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thank you very much, they have arrived and are quite small so I will keep them sheltered or in the shed until spring!
