Cosmos

My cosmos stems have aerial roots, have successfully planted one on so far. Is this unusual and will my plants survive the Cornish winter?

Certainly you could take cuttings, they are half way there. Whether they would survive the winter depends on whether you can keep them frost free or not and enough light.  I sow my cosmos seeds in march, with a view to planting out late May. You could risk planting them out after Easter in a sheltered area.
