Rudbeckia

Morning, my Rudbeckia are now past their best. Is it ok to cut them back now & by how much? Thanks

  • I leave them and cut them back when growth starts in the spring. That gives the crown a bit of protection through the winter but, even better is the delight I get from watching goldfinches feeding on the seeds through the cold weather. They prefer them to any of the expensive food in the bird feeders and watching their acrobatics on the waving stems delays  the start of housework tasks very effectively.  ;)

I'd agree with Dove, Jon. No need to tidy them till next year  :)

Perhaps I should get one now that I have goldies visiting. Lady across the road has one near her front door. I'll keep an eye out to see if the goldies visit her plant later in the year  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I cut ours down last year around late October, because I wanted to put a thick mulch over the bed. They have been great this year but about a foot shorter.
