Wow @Kitty 2 don't you just love a bargain  :) and "didn't you do well!" I just love sorting seed packets in the dead of winter, it just brightens the gloom.

You might be right about sweetcorn but I have grown them successfully in a sq m, don't bother these days as I grow for myself and they are lovely fresh for the first couple, then I start to think Oh Dear sweetcorn again! Beans on the other hand, fine from the freezer  :)

    Indeed I did @herbaceous 😁.
I thoroughly recommend popping in if you have a wilko in your area, the sale has some crazy markdowns every year. In addition to veg and flower seeds I picked up this lot.

The plant labels, tom food and iron sulphate were 50p each. Packs of 10 coated metal plant supports £1 each, and just 25p for the box of 3x2m netting.

I googled those 'poppy go' veg trugs... £20 on amazon 😱

Try small squash varieties such as Utchi Kuri or Potimarron.  Lovely bright burnt orange colour too and just right for feeding two as soup or roasted.

I'm off to do Nanny duty tomorrow @Kitty 2 and there is one near my daughter, definitely going to check it out! I don't have transport (other than my bike) and the local bus no longer goes to our local Wilko so I don't really go there. I'll be getting a lift home Tues from daughter though - so who knows?

I hope there's something left for you @herbaceous. It flies off the shelves when silly season starts (which is about the same time the halloween tat arrives instore). I don't drive either, but am lucky to have one within walking distance.

I grew Utchi kuri and sweet dumpling squash this year, while the squashes are small (we're only two people so that's perfect) the plants are not. I gave them 1m spacing and the vines are more than 5m away from where they started now! (not as bad as a Atlantic giant pumpkin where I measured one vine at 20m. TWENTY!)
I also grew three types of courgette "golden zuchinni" was the smallest plant but it got to around 150cm round but the end. do not even try black beauty, great plant, great producer but each plant was over 2m square!

You can have a productive garden in a large pot, so your border will do just fine. for growing things close together good soil is a must, so make sure to add lots of compost before you start.

  • You would certainly have room for onions and salad leaves there. One row of each would be good.
