Care for flower bulbs

New to gardening! I understand that bulbs are lifted and stored. I have bought lots of bulbs, is it healthy to leave them in the ground permanently. Will this have a detrimental affect on them. Or can they happily remain there and thrive?

  • It depends on the type of bulbs and  the soil and growing conditions in your garden.

    Which bulbs do you have?
Many , like daffs are happier left in the ground, most tulips have a limited life, some of the more tender bulbs, like lilies are best lifted.
If your ground is free draining, you can get away with leaving more planted, than if you have wet , heavy clay. It's more often the wet which damages, than cold.

Yes - let us know what you have, as they can have different requirements. Many just stay put and can then multiply over time.  :)
The 'fancy' tulips are generally the most fussy regarding their needs.

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I have lilies left in the ground flowering for years, but I guess it does depend on variety
