Hard to tell without a flower spike. It could be couch grass but the root doesn't look right (unless that's not the whole root) https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=283

Whatever it is, if it's growing where you don't want it then it's a weed.

Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • Hi Jenny, thanks 4 the reply, that is the actual root on the right hand side- no rhizomes or anything.

In that case not couch grass (fortunately).

It could be Poa Annua, annual medow grass. Common when the lawn has dried up. Feed your lawn to keep out the competition. Keep raking it to lift all the blades upwards before mowing. If there are unslightly tufts, dig them out and re-seed.
  • Thanks Borderline. Yes lawn did dry up this summer. Will give it a good feed and take your advice.
