Mulch - horse manure

Mary370Mary370 Posts: 2,003
I've recently received a couple of bins of old horse manure...... :p:p
Is there any plant which it cannot be used on?  Camelia, hydrangea, elder, maple tree, hardy perennials?  Or is it safe to use on all plants?
Also, the lid of my bucket of chicken manure pellets was blown off and it is now a mush of damp smelly mush........where to put it?

As long as it's well rotted, it's fine for most plants. If you have very heavy soil, dig it into the soil first and then lay a second layer in.
  • I know a gardener who think they may have killed their Kirengeshoma palmata with horse manure; More generally I would be careful with woodland plants.

I've never had an issue using well rotted manure on any plant  :)
Could you mix your 'chicken pellet mush' in your  compost bin, if you have one? Or even with some soil and compost. Once mixed with other materials, it wouldn't be too concentrated into one area.
I expect you could also just spread it out in small amounts around plants, in the same way you would if it was dry.
Maybe wear a pair of gloves when you do that Mary  ;)

  • If the manure is still fresh and you're worried about the acidity harming a plant, put a cardboard "collar" round it when you lollop it on. Horse manure... you should be so lucky!

Thanks everyone.........I'm pretty sure it's old as there is no smell off it, and it is earthy looking.
