Little confused

What to do I took my lilies out of pots sone like old six pence some size of a tennis ball I had very careful they started to peel off like onions. Should l dry them or put them back in fresh compost?

    I leave mine in their pots.  When they finish flowering I cut off the spent flowers and move the pots to somewhere less conspicuous so the foliage can feed up the bulbs for next year.   Then I put them somewhere sheltered form the worst frosts.  Top dress and fertilise in spring and start watering.

    Every 2 or 3 years I tip them out in spring, re-plant the big bulbs in fresh compost in cleaned pots and grow the small ones on in other pots until they get to flowering size.  Any individual scales that fall off can also be potted up and grown on.
