Pickling onions

I would like to grow my own pickling onions, any recommendations of a good variety would be welcome.

I just grow shallots to pickle. They make a superior pickled onion and if you're lucky you can get up to 12 onions from one set.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I like Red Sun shallots ... great for pickling and cooking

Pickle them as soon as they're dry though as shallots don't store very well. I had to wait a few weeks this year before pickling and lost about a quarter of my crop to mould. I'm kicking myself now. :/

I like Pompeii for silverskins, but I have had great sucess with ordinary bedfordshire champion onions I suspect any onion will do it. The way I do it with full sized onions is to plant them in groups of  10/15 since there's way too many too close they only grow to be a bit larger than a set the perfect size in my opinion for pickling!
