Front Garden Borders

All,

I have recently had my front garden landscaped, and part of that involved the creation of two narrow borders alongside the path (I've not filled the right hand side with soil yet).

I'm looking for some advice as to what I can plant here as I'd like something that makes the approach to our house look attractive, whilst at the same time going nicely with the photinia red robin hedge.  Ideally something that won't grow too high.  A box hedge, perhaps?

Aspect wise it's north facing, so it gets very little sun (hence why I had to replace the real grass with artificial stuff).
