Sweet potato

About this time last year I took a sweet potato and kept it in water. Early this year it grew some shoots which I broke off and left in water and it grew roots, I planted these and now they've been on the garden for a few months.

Last week I moved some soil back and found no sweet potatoes. Is it time to give up and clear it away or wait a little longer?

I would have expected tubers by now. Frosts are due and they won't be swelling any more. Once the tops have been frosted that will be that. Maybe they are deeper down. Try carefully digging up the whole plant.
