Laurel hedge

My laurel headge is around around 18 months old, was thriving until summer, can’t get rid of powdery mildew that forms on the underside of new leaves only. I’ve used mildew spray and I’ve pruned the affected leaves time and time again, just can’t get rid of it.

They are still very young and judging by the issues you are facing, you need to keep an eye on the watering. Keep them well watered during the first few years, and when the weather is hot and dry, you must water it generously in the evenings or early mornings out of the bright sun. Lay a very thick layer of compost or bark chip if you haven't already. Helps to keep the shrub more stable with conditions and temperatures. When pruning back, always clean your tools and blades. Also, cut harder into the wood to create more branching, they will bounce back eventually.
  • Thanks, I might buy some bark. They was being watered well in the hot weather, I thought I may have been watering too much. So it’s not too late in the year to cut right back?

I would leave them because new young growth will not be ideal going into the winter.

With watering it’s better to water generously in one go into the base areas rather than watering bits every day. So hard to work out what over watering might be.
