They do better in the ground if you have the right type of soil. Otherwise, after three years, I would tip them out, examine the soil carefully for lily beetle larvae, then repot the best ones in fresh rich compost with a good part of loam mixed in.  Any small bulbs (offsets) I would grow on separately to bring them up to flowering size.
  • I agree with fb.  If you don't have a well-drained sunny area to plant them out, it's worth noting that they seem to always have lots of white (live) roots year round so repotting is never easy but now is the best time to do it.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • I have some tree lilies planted in the shade, they have done well for 5 years now. They don't tolerate really dark corners (i.e. under a tree)  - they will still grow, but they are small and stragly. I have four planted behind a large rhododendron, beside a hedge, about five foot high, they come up about 6ft tall and flower well
