capillary matting

I was contemplating getting this for my various pots as it seems to waste less water. However I am unsure if you need to keep the matting in tray or can you just lay it on the surface?

    individual saucers are best to saving water IMHO capillary matting has a much larger surface area = more evaporation.

    I use capillary matting in trays and also on a shelf with the end of the matting dipping into a reservoir of water below. I think it would dry out very quickly if you just put it on the surface but I haven't tried it.
