  • Soil is always useful, and sub-soil, if that is all you have, can be improved by adding lots of organic matter such as leafmould and well rotted manure. It will already contain minerals and some kinds of soil bacteria and creatures. You could perhaps remove some from a small area and replace it with some topsoil to get you started, but  don't waste it. Put it somewhere out of the way, add some organic stuff  to it and mix it in and in a year or two it will be good to mulch your borders!
