I took some rose cuttings from my David Austin roses 2 weeks ago and they have already started to produce shoots. Does this mean they have rooted already? Surely they wouldn't root this fast would they?
Hi, I suspect they are using the energy from the sugars stored in the stems. The leaves will probably fade and drop of in a few weeks or so. Roots will take a few months at least to appear.
Leave them alone all winter and keep them in a sheltered spot where they won't get frozen. You should have roots by spring. Tip out gently and pot on those that have rooted.

I would say, not always, but certainly possible... so there may be the beginnings of roots forming, I've seen that in 2 weeks from canes stuck in the ground, but it's whether they survive and start to grow on or not... it can be just as likely for the canes to turn yellow then black at some point, and just die off... even by next Spring you cannot be sure as they need the whole season to grow on, to develop those roots that will survive transplanting... if you remove them too soon and pot them up, they can die off...

Thanks guys. I did successfully take rose cuttings last year and I have a couple of lovely bushy roses and im so pleased with how they are doing, however I don't remember getting shoots so fast.
So I will protect these new ones over winter and I won't disturb them by checking for roots until next year.
