Patio Rose Recommendations

Please could you offer me any recommendations for fragrant patio roses? I will be growing them in containers which are approximately 41cms deep x 33cms wide at the top. I have chosen patio roses as I don't want them to grow much higher than 60/70cms but I would like them to bush out. I love the scent of roses and the preliminary research I've done has come up with the following: Flower Power Gold, Diamond Eyes, Rebecca and Baby Face which also gives me four distinctly different colours. Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated. There appears to be a distinct lack of highly fragrant patio roses?

That's because by their very nature, patio roses are bred to look good in pots, on the patio... therefore disease resistance is the priority... unfortunately in rose genetics, the genes for scent and disease resistance sit close together, and one usually dominates over the other...so you get disease free scentless roses, and highly fragrant disease prone roses... the trick for breeders is to find the rose that combines both - a tough call.

Of those you mention, needless to say the best is Diamond Eyes, for fragrance, and needless to say it defoliates from black spot mid summer...or it's liable to do so...
I don't know 'Rebecca'... there are several roses under this name...

I would look to dwarf polyantha roses... these I would recommend..
'Cecile Brunner'...'Marie Pavie'...'Nathalie Nypels'... and the English Rose 'Lady Emma Hamilton'....   all these are short growing little roses, lots of scent, and reasonable disease resistance...
For a short hybrid tea, you could do worse than 'Fragrant Cloud', another small rose suitable for a pot... lovely rich colour too...

  • That's really helpful, thank you. I particularly like Marie Pavie, Lady Emma Hamilton and Fragrant Cloud. You obviously know your roses  :) Please could I ask you if you think the container size I mention in my post would be suitable for these roses - I believe they have long roots?

I would find those rather small, as the roses you  buy will be on rootstock, but o.k. for one season.... it would be better if they were a minimum of 18 inches across the top [I'm afraid I talk in old money]… and 18 inches deep... I think this would be 45cm x 45 cm deep...

This is 'Souvenir de la Malmaison', an old fashioned rose, growing in such a pot.  The rose is usually seen about 3 x 3 foot...   so this size of pot is both reasonable for the size of rose, and easy enough for most people to manage..

    ..enjoy your roses !...
