Pruning a Cypress

Does anyone know if you can keep a Macrocarpa Goldcrest at a lower height,by keeping it cut,say to about 4/5 feet?
I want some winter structure but my garden isn't big.

    Absolutely !
I keep one of these to around 6' high ; give a periodic VERY LIGHT * trim to keep it in shape , cut out the growing tip carefully and keep the top just rounded-off .
Aim for a shape reminiscent of a candle flame !

    * Refrain from trimming too harshly as it may not regenerate from 'brown-wood' .
  • Thank you @Paul B3 that's great, they are such a bright colour for winter, and should look nice as a backdrop for the spring bulbs. I will follow your trimming advice.

I agree , they are a very bright 'backdrop' for the winter months ; originating as a cultivar of the Monterrey Cypress from California , they can grow to colossal proportions if unchecked .
    Good luck with yours !
