Heavy clay bed badly needs mulching .
Primroses leaves have started to peek through.
How deep a mulch will the primrose leaves be able to climb through?
Mulch will be own compost.
In London. Keen but lazy.

They grow in woodland and regularly grow through a mulch of autumn leaves, so should cope unless the mulch is very heavy or very thick.
If you apply it more gently by hand, just around the primroses, you should be able to brush it away from the new leaves a little.

The compost is quite light. Would 2 inches be too much?
