What is this

I noticed this on a tree about 3weeks ago. Its rusty in colour and not sticky. I think the tree is known as a wedding cake tree.

  • It might be totally unrelated but I have a tree that used to have weep marks that looked like that (caused by hammering a bonfire night Catherine wheel or two to it 😳 before I was much of a gardener) The weep mark has cleared over time but now just has nobbles of black resin around the nail/where a nail had been. Is there no chance it's received any damage recently or used to have a plant label nailed to it as a younger tree? Clutching at straws really. My tree hasn't suffered with its top growth like you say yours is though. I hope your tree will be OK and somebody can give you a better definitive answer.
  • I really should apologise to my tree 😳
  • Thanks for this. More likely canker. I'll look into it further
  • looks more like a Swedish whitebeam than a wedding cake tree, however it does look like canker and more than likely the trees days are numbered

Bleeding canker. Will stop bleeding overwinter and start again next summer. Some trees can go on like this for years. Tree looks like a Sorbus aria, they drop their leaves quite early.
