Garlic

Do I need to buy new garlic , or is it safe to replant my own cloves?
The plants were healthy and will be going into clean ground.

I believe opinions differ on this, but I just replant my own. I get a great crop, and pick some nice fat cloves to go back in. I would buy if my crop wasn’t good, but that hasn’t happened yet.
  • Thanks for that, I understand about risking disease,  but had already set aside some nice fat heads from my first crop and don't need to order anything else at the moment. I am really pleased with the flavour, much better than SM stuff!
  • I let one of my bigger garlic bulbs flower and form bulbills two years ago,
I then planted them last year and now have cloves to plant this year for harvest next year, hopefully i'll get a good crop as they're adapted to my local climate

If the bulbs are healthy, it must be worth a go.  I have my first ever crop this year, all stored on mesh trays to air and looking good and excellent flavour but I think I'll play safe and buy fresh bulbs to plant till I get to know the growing and cropping better.

  • My first time too, for garlic, though I've grown onions before.
Summer ones usually do quite well,  the winter ones I tried this time were useless - though it was a 'Beast'' of a winter!
So I was pleased with the garlic and the shallots, and the next bed in rotation has better soil, now it's fingers crossed for a good crop!

Not sure whether that's right, or what you mean by 'adapt'?

I think they way garlic is propagated will mean it's genetically identical from one generation to the next.

I have to say I save some of my crop to replant they are 2nd generation 'Marcos'. I have not done it yet it is on my to do list.
  • I am not sure, but with potatoes I have come a cropper (no pun intended) when planting supermarket potatoes. I now understand they are sprayed with chemicals to prevent potatoes producing sprouts (how horrible!). I wonder if you can plant supermarket garlic?

I planted supermarket garlic (organic) three years ago, I've been planting it back each year and it's only getting better. I will be planting mine again in a couple of weeks.

I did notknow supermarket potatoes were sprayed, with what.. suppose you cook jacket potatoes that means wewould ingest chemical whilst trying to be healthy..  My supermarket spuds often sprout..
