How Annoying!

I've been collecting seeds and cuttings, labelling carefully, but a couple of days ago i took some berry looking seeds,to dry off! Oh heck! Now don't have a clue where they're from! Lesson learnt, always have a pen ready! Possibly a penstemon!

  • I was sent 'secret' seeds on the Seed Swap thread. They came as a little extra thing along with what I had asked for. Can't wait to see what they might be.

  • I'm still waiting for the seeds I put directly into the ground,to flower.....they have leaves like a dandelion, only a little furry! Think it must be a perennial as its getting a bit late in the season now for something flowering! The slugs and snails have had a go at it! When will I learn that the memory isn't what it was!!😕
I hope your secret seeds are something really nice @plant pauper!  I love surprises in the garden! You often get one in these mixed cottage garden ones!

  • If they are like dandelion leaves but a little longer and pointier they might be Evening Primrose. Oenothera. Mine seed all over the place and then flower in their second year.

Valley Gardener, a furry dandelion might be Hawkbit, or Hawkweed, Leontodon might be the right name. At least it would mean you could eliminate it if it is not .

Thank you @Rubytoo, no it isn't that,it came from a packet of flower seeds, but it could possibly be the evening primrose, similar leaf, but of course no stems or buds, that will maybe be next year.........I have to leave them to see what happens!

I think because of moving to a garden that had nothing,I scattered "free" seeds in between the few plants I bought. The cornflowers and poppies didn't even appear,so I guess the snails had them as they came through!
I'm not being taken in by "free" seeds anymore, stuck on magazines.I'd rather pay for what I want, not what they say is in a packet, which turns out to be a con.
You don't get owt for nowt!!

I never sow direct, I wouldn’t ever see them again!
With regard to the berry type seeds, that won’t be a penstemon, they don’t produce berries
which free seeds were a con and not what they were meant to be? .

  • Hollyhocks were meant to be a deep ruby red, they came out white, the Penstemons said Mixed, but every single one was "Garnet" Sweet Peas were supposed to be Purple, and they came up mixed colours. Next spring I won't be buying the mags,I'd rather spend money on what I want. The corncockles were very successful,I guess the snails don't like them.😁

I wish I could remember the berry ones! Anyway I have them drying off,so will have another mooch round the garden in case it jogs my memory! The reason I said Penstemon, was that I had one this year that was new to me,called Hunters Red.Small white flowers, but red leaves.

Do you mean that the seed pods are just a round berry shape? Mulleins have rounded pods. I grow the Moth Mullein and they have very round large berry shaped pods.
I forget I scatter seeds in gaps, then hoe or pull them out as weeds a few weeks later. I should label them too or like Lyn said, I sow them in pots or trays, or I never see them again.

  • @Rubytoo,I won't do it again that's for sure!  I can't believe that I picked this little bunch of berries, popped them into my little £10 plastic GH on my way in,and actually thought at the time,I'll remember what they are!! No pen or label to hand at the time! It must be my age!  It's been raining here ever since so no chance to peruse the garden for a clue!! Will let you know if I remember!!

  • I remember!!   The berry type things, which are a mulberry colour, came from Huskers Red Penstemon. I was in the garden earlier and spotted a small twig that I had missed, and that was the plant.  I see the last time I mentioned it the spell check said it was Hunters not Huskers. Anyway they are drying nicely, with a few seeds coming out already.
