Echinacea and slugs?

MeomyeMeomye Posts: 949
I bought a Purpurea Rubinglow and an Amazing Dream Echinacea online in the spring and put them into pots on the patio. One of them (don't know which one) has produced no flowers at all, the other one has, but was still a little disappointing.  I now think that potting was not such a great idea and intend to put them into the border but have read the slugs like them. Is this the case? if so how do you deal with it please? T.I.A.

  • I've never had a problem with either slugs or snails eating echinacea although I don't have those particular varieties.

I no longer grow them because of slug and snail damage.

Slugs love them when they are young - the plants, not the slugs....
  • My purpurea get attacked when first emerging but withstand it when they are larger plants so I think you did the right thing by growing them on to be larger plants, Meomye.  Planting out now will let them get some new roots down while the soil is still warm before the tops die off over winter.  Keep an eye out for slug/snail damage on the emeging shoots next spring though.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
