Pruning Woody Lavender

We have 4 large lavender plants in our front garden which are well over 10 years old. They flower beautifully every year but are a bit big and very woody.

What's the best way to prune these and make them smaller (remove around 1/3) without ruining them?

Thanks

You done well to keep them going for 10 years. Never prune into the woody sections. You can prune them down next year in early spring. But, you need to cut above the woody sections. But in reality, it might be best to buy new plants or take cuttings for the future. They don't look good once they go all woody.

Sometimes you can see new growth on the stems lower down which you can prune up to, otherwise I agree with Borderline get new plants
  • New plants are relatively cheap. Or if you have nothing to lose, why not try propagating them right now ?
