  • Mmm .... I like Carex buchanii ... I grew it in our last garden ... and the hellebore idea is interesting, but don't they like alkaline soils?

Our hellebores thrive under trees, most of our garden is acid so most likely hellebores good for acidic soil

I grow them in my acidic soil - maybe mine haven't read the book.

They like it dry, so are good for pots.

Grasses would be long-term companions, but if one wants some flowery add-ons, bulbs would give some shape to the display, in complementing or analogous colours: tulips, short irises, crocuses ...
  • I bought some Vanguard crocuses for the container this morning  :)

  • Well, here we are ... Carex buchannii, Heuchera 'Forever Purple' and Calluna vulg. 'Boskoop'   and there are some violet coloured crocuses among them to pop up in the spring.  I need to get some gravel to top dress it, but I'm very pleased with that ... Thanks everyone for your suggestions :) ... including the ones I didn't take up ... there's another container to fill for the back garden .............
