Due to the soil being so dry and compacted, it looks like the rougher grass has taken over. It's very hard to know if it's annual meadow grass or Couch grass. But either way, you will need to rake over the areas, then start aerating the area. If you have the time and energy, you should try to dig some of the larger clumps out and level the soil with some top soil and re-seed afterwards. This can be done now. But if it's too much work, you can resume in the spring next year.

Mine looked very similar earlier in the year, and many other people will also have had the same.
The 'proper' grass has simply suffered from the hot, dry weather, and the rough grass has got the upper hand.
I've done pretty much what Borderline has described, although I did it about a month ago when our weather was back to it's more usual damp conditions, and it made aerating a lot easier.  Fortunately, there was still enough warmth for the seed to germinate, and it's now looking a lot better.
It wouldn't be warm enough here to sow seed now, and have it germinate before winter, but if you're in a warmer area, this is often a very good time to do it, as there's more rain to dampen ground, but still enough heat to get grass growing.  :)

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Another option is to simply re-turf the lot in the spring. Just dig it all over then lay the truf  like a carpet on top. Not too expensive, instant lawn
