Sweet potatoes

Has anyone grown sweet potatoes?

Posts

  • Just searched sweet potato and there is lots info.
  • yes, start them early as they need a long time to grow,
no matter what they say they are better grown undercover (that way you can start them early)
don't start them in a pot and then plant out as the tubers become twisted in the pot.
be prepared for them to put on 25 to 30 feet of growth easily in a season
be careful to control slugs as they'll eat into the tubers
  • We have grown some "slips" that we bought by mail order.  They are in grow bags in our conservatory - planted around late May time.  The plants have grown enormous, filling the bags and we have trained the shoots up bamboos.  The plants have now flowered and we aren't sure when we should harvest them.  Sorry I can't give you the outcome as yet David - the plants are still growing and producing flowers, I guess we will have to wait until the growth has slowed down or stopped before we can harvest the crop (if there is one).
