Can I keep my cuttings indoors this Winter?

I've just taken loads - rose, clematis, trachelospermum, acer...but I won't have a garden for 3 months in between moves - so can I take them to my temporary accommodation and stick them on a windowsill indoors, away from any source of heat? Thanks.

If you've got no other option, then it's got to be worth a go. If you have a spare room that you can keep cool, then l would try that. How big a windowsill does it need to be? Tbh a table near the window is a better bet, then they won't get chilled at night when curtains are drawn (assuming it's curtains, not blinds).
  • If you need to keep them on the windowsill try putting newspaper between them and the glass to keep the cold off overnight. I do this with seed trays in February , just remember to unwrap them in the morning.😁
  • Thanks both. I've about 3 small pots and 2 larger ones.
There's a coffee table near a window I could use too - good idea!
Does the newspaper trick work for double glazed windows too, purpleallim?

    Are they all rooted?

  • Mine are all double glazed, but you would be amazed the difference in temperature near the glass so yes still do it

I took rosemary cuttings last year stuffed them in pots and left them in my living room over winter, out of 15 I have 12 that took and are now small plants. It seemed to work fine, now my living room did drop to 4C at one point and never gets over 15 or so in the winter... so your mileage may vary. The mother plant lived in the greenhouse over winter, I suspect the babies  could have as well, I can't leave them outside the winter kills rosemary here.

(we don't use it in the winter, other than under a mountain of blankets to watch a film)

I was wondering Skandi -0 then saw your line within paragraph! Sad;y, the living room where I'll be going is a lot warmer - but near big window and away from radiator, so could work, I hope...
