Odd plant

Can someone tell me what this tall plant is that has grown in a seed mix?

The tall stalky thing nearest the wall, I’ve never seen this before.

Should I pull it out?

Looks like a type of bamboo.
  • Looks like a bamboo to me.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thanks I did wonder if it was. Odd to get that in a flowering seed mix.
    Should I pull them out?

Are you sure it isn't creeping in from somewhere else? As you say it would be odd to include an invasive plant in a seed mix. I'd rip it out and try and get as much root out with it as you can.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Invasive bamboo species can send out feeder roots many, many feet away from the parent plant, meaning you can easily find new plants popping up just about anywhere. They're a pain in the **** from personal experience and unless you want it to take over, then definitely uproot with as much root system as you can find.
Coukd very well be coming from a neighbour's garden, so be vigilant!
  • Looks like some sort of reedy grass to me, I've had something the same or similar growing in my borders and pulled it out.
  • Check out arundo grass (giant reed) looks like a similar type of thing I've seen growing at the edge of local ponds. Too many types of grasses to identify it though. Was it a wildflower meadow mix you sowed?
  • Hi thanks to everyone for their comments and advice.
Have dug up the ? Bamboo and safely contained it in a pot!

I have a lot of bird feeders in the garden so the seed could possibly have come from that source.

  • Nicely done.   Let us know if there are any changes such as flowers appearing so we can try and identify it further. :)
