Acer advice!

Recently repotted my acers in a mix of ericaceous compost and normal soil.
They now look really sad.
What have I done wrong?
many thanks.
Pictures to follow.

  • Acers have very fine roots which are easily disturbed however careful you are. Keep well watered but not waterlogged they will recover.

  • About this time of year Acers start loosing leaves.

Did you repot into a very big pot? They do best if just potted up a size or so. Too big a pot can cause issues as the roots don't cope well with a sudden change into a big amount of soil, and can rot more easily.
Have you kept them somewhere with a bit of shade and watered well?
Some photos would help though William, as it could just be that they're settling in.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  •  This is where they were with old pots also and in the new ones. I’ll send a picture of what they look
    like now soon

Agree with other posters that at this time of year, leaves are starting to drop.
perhpa they also didn't appreciate being reported when they weren't totally dormant?
  • Maybe the pots were one size too big but are not that bad. Young plants are touchy I have found and the self seeded ones I have tried to grow on have a 1 in 3 success rate. Keep trying and don't give up on them. Just be careful of cold and winds this winter, but they do better if kept outside or in a greenhouse.
  • You think they’ll be ok?
  • Have I made a mistake with the ericaceous compost?
  • I would keep them outdoors. More light, and I have a hunch air flow will be beneficial as well, as well as normal seasonal temperature fluctuations.
