Preparing a raised bed for Alpines

I have a small raised bed which I have just cleared; west facing, shaded by the house in winter. Topsoil is reasonable but we hit clay about 15 cm down. I'm ready to add some grit and stones but to what depth should I go?

I think you will need to sort out the clay layer at just 15 cm down. I think, if you can, incorporate a lot of grit and larger size stones down there to aid the drainage. I would say at least a foot down. If not, there is a danger of water sitting at that layer if not sorted now before planting.
