Sunflower With Second Smaller Head

I have about a dozen sunflowers that are nearing the point of dropping their seeds. On one of them there is a second much smaller head that just started growing. The main head is about 20 centimeters in diameter and quite dried out. While the new bud is only about 3 cm in diameter. What do you think's going on here?

It looks as if your plant is a single giant sunflower that has simply 'decided' to produce a second flower head. It may not fully develop.

I'll wait to harvest this one and see if it blooms. It would make an interesting contrast to see a small fresh sunflower next to a massive dead one on the same plant.
