Sunflower with offshoot bloom

It's September and my sunflowers are finished - just huge seedheads. But one of them has a new flower coming out of a leaf junction on the stem about 30cm below the dead flower head. Is this normal? If I leave it will it prosper?

Normal for some sunflowers. If it can get to flowering before the frosts start it will be OK

You will get more flowers if you deadhead the plants.
