@Qas All that rock did indeed come from the bed. The rotovator bounces a bit as it hits them, then I chucked them onto the drive as I moved on.
@gardeninglily1 I'm aiming to clear the polytunnel of Hostas and there are about 1,000 in there so most will end up in the new beds . Lots of grasses need splitting too, so ,in they'll go too.
I'm planning on having "hot" colours nearer the house and cooler colours in the new beds.
There's another one beyond the rotovator in photo 2.

Total of 50m long and 3m deep. ( widening toward the gate by the trees.
@Fire ,The garden totals 7.6 acres.

Oh it's going to be fabulous!  Have you been growing all the hostas with this site in mind?

I must say, it so helpful and inspirational to see people's photo's and see what can be achieved, it has given me a much needed boost to take my task to completion  :) thankyou.

erm, I'm rather embarrassed to admit, I've grown the Hostas with NO site in mind for them. I think I just got carried away.
Where's the blushing emoji when you need it?

  • Wow! Scary!  I wouldn’t know what to do with 7 acres! Can’t wait to see it all planted up - the best bit but that will be a mammoth task in itself! It reminds me of the huge sweeping borders you see in stately homes and public gardens. Hats off to you @Hostafan1 :)

To be fair, about 4 acres is young woodland, which doesn't get much attention, and 0.8 acres is a lake at the bottom.
It keeps me out of mischief ( usually ;) )
    Thanks for the kind words.

    That’s an impressive plot!

Is now the best time to prepare new beds for next year, or is it as good to do it in spring?

I don’t think I have any soil improvement to do, just digging up turf and/or building raised beds.

I'd say, if you have time, do it now whilst the weather is half decent.
For me, there's a risk about Spring weather here in Devon ( rain usually ) and there's always so much more to do in Spring than at this time of year.

@Hostafan1 , I'm sorely envious of your lovely new border - the soil looks really good and rich.

For contrast, here's mine!  This has had the (mostly brown) turf turned in.  Three bags of farmyard manure and a bin full of homemade compost to be added when I can summon up the energy.
Please ignore the dodgy "lawn" - it's been scarified, aerated and overseeded so it ought to look better in a few weeks or so.

Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained

@JennyJ, that's looking good. What are you planning to go in it?
