Concorde pear tree

The tree is about four years old and has this year produced a lot of fruit for the first time. I have had to use my beach fishing rod rest to support a couple of branches as they were in danger of snapping under the weight. My question is, when should I pick the fruits?. Is it a case of twisting the fruit and if it detaches it's ready?. A neighbour has suggested picking the biggest ones and storing somewhere to ripen. I really don't want to lose this crop as both my Victoria plum and Egremont Russet have failed miserably this year. Thanks.

  • We have an espaliered Concorde. I pick each fruit individually when they detach when lifted and twisted. After that a rest in the fruit bowl for two or three days and the colour mellows just a bit and the fruit ‘gives’ just a bit when the area near the stem is tested gently with my thumb.  Then I eat it. A marvellous pear

  • pears in this country struggle to ripen on the tree (its just not warm long enough) so you need to pick and ripen indoors, your neighbour might be right, pick the biggest and leave the rest to grow a little more,

its been a very good year for pears, its the first year (in about 15) that i've had to thin my pears.
