What climber for a dry soil due being in a planter, south west facing

I had a planter built 12 x 2.5 feet as the soil was poor , it faces S, SW. A grapevine at one end is doing well. What can I plant in the other corner- shadier as there’s a summerhouse alongside. Prone to drought in summer. At right angles is another planter, 5x 2 ft. I’d like an evergreen climber to screen me from the house, drought tolerant again, any ideas? PS the fence behind has ivy trying to grow through from a no man’s land gully between my fence and the neighbour’s concrete wall. This summer, herbs  and sedum did well in the planter. Last year my veg succumbed to lack of water :(

  • Maybe a watering system would be a good idea?

A lovely corner but your grapevine will probably cover the whole of that pergola fairly soon. You could try the evergreen trachelospermum asiatica (scented white flowers) or an evergreen winter flowing clematis like "Freckles".  Both would need to be kept well watered if in planters, the clematis more so.

You could try either Solanum Crispum ‘Glasnevin’ or the more aggressive Solanum Jasminoides that will grow very big and fast. Both semi- evergreen if on a sheltered wall. You could always improve your soil in your raised beds by adding more loam based compost.
  • Thanks for the advice everyone. Buttercupdays any advice on a watering system? I’ll check out the climbers , thanks
  • Not from me I'm afraid. I have read about other peoples' systems though, so hope someone with experience will respond.
I live in a very rural spot and my water supply is a spring - fed tank up on the hillside. I don't even allow myself a hosepipe, except very occasionally for the greenhouse. Normally rely on rainfall. usually a safe option here, but this summer, for the first time in 35 years, had no water at all for 2 months. A few precious things got watered with bought water, the rest had to take their chances!
  • I have a passion flower (Passiflora) in a similar spot. Exquisite flowers all summer long and will cover easily vigorous . Orange fruit in Autumn. I grew mine from seed. Tolerates dryness.
  •  ;)
  • Thanks everyone, much appreciated. Just decision time ..
  • I may try a second grapevine in the back and a wisteria in the front... still thinking about it!

I wouldn't plant a wisteria, they can get to 70 ft - and certainly not in a planter!
