Sunflowers

Can anyone tell me what would have eaten the heads completely off my sunflowers? They have both gown to 6ft and head heads were about to open but look as though they have been chopped off with a knife! It’s very odd and there is no sign off them on the floor.
Thanks

    Neighbours?
  • I thought it could be but the house next door is empty, the guy has recently moved out and no one else would have access.

I hear this can happen but I've never had it. I'm not sure that squirrels or pigeons would leave a cut like a knife. I hope your plants are multiheaded and you will have more springing.
  • Thanks thanks for replying, I think they’ve had it but I’ll keep an eye out.

    Such a shame
They have for sure been cut by a Human.Sunflower heads are very sturdy and believe me when you cut the heads off to collect the seeds it does take some cutting. Only this weekend I cut the heads of my sunflowers for seeds as they had started to die off and that took a bit of cutting.I have never lost a sunflower head over the years and even if it was windy the heads would not come away. I think someone got into the house next door and removed the heads
