Clinker / ash paths in garden

I have started digging in old Victorian house garden. I have 2 areas of heavy deposits from fires. Clinker and ash. Many decades of emptying grates i think.  Will anything grow in these areas? Do I have to add top soil and mix. Struggling to find anything on line.  Many thanks

Anything nasty in them ought to have been washed out over the years. Much of my main alpine growing area has a clinker, ash, coal substrate and there are no problems growing things.
It is always advisable to add humus to that kind of area. Leaf mould, well rotted manure. garden compost, whatever you can get hold of.
