Patio Rose Help

We have a patio rose that was bought for us from B&Q about 5 years ago.

We planted it in a fairly sunny East facing border but it's never done that well.  It flowers a little but is fairly scraggly and barely grown so we figure it needs to be moved elsewhere.

Our soil is fairly free-draining loam although it's current spot may be a bit dry due to a nearby tree.

We could put it in our South facing front garden, although as we're on a slope it's quite open to the elements (more wind as we're in Kent) or in a pot on our patio.

So I'm looking for some advice on when best to move it, where you would move it to, and any tips for making sure it's successful.

Thanks,
   Adrian

What is the name of your rose, do you know please?
Patio roses I find are best grown in pots, as being rather small in stature, tend to get lost in the garden.. depends where they're situated..
I think the term patio rose tends to imply a potted situation.. so if that's an option for you, I would go that way and I feel sure you would get a better result..

'Sweet Dream' is one of the better patio roses available, which has stood the test of time...

  • I'm afraid I don't know the name of it.  The tag has gotten lost, but I'm pretty sure it didn't actually say.

If I do decide to move it into a pot, when is the best time to move it without risking killing it?  I assume I should cut back the rose sensibly before moving it.

    Thanks

Any time from late Oct to end of March... at a time that suits you, whether you transfer it in the ground, or put it in a pot... if it was mine I would choose to do it probably mid Feb, if the weather is reasonable... that would set it up for the rest of the year... for potting mix I use a 50/50 mix JI no. 2 or 3, and Multi purpose... but you could use just MP for that little rose... it'll be ok...  some ordinary granular fertilizer in Mar/April would be good... and if you're really on the ball, some liquid tomato food occasionally throughout the season...
