I’m fairly new to gardening could anyone tell me what this plant is called please

    A canna, I would imagine.

    Thank you, I had been told it was an Ethiopian red banana plant but someone told me that they don’t flower and it was probably a canna. I left it out last winter so I must have been lucky for it to survive it did only have the tiniest shoot in spring I almost threw it away but thought I would wait and see so pleased I did.

    Yes it's a canna.  We move ours (in its pot) into the garage before the frosts start and just leave it there for the winter (no watering) until the spring when we re-pot it with fresh compost (a mix of JI No 2 and MPC) and move it into the studio which has bright light like a conservatory or greenhouse ... it goes outside at the end of May when the frosts are over ... it gets tomato feed once a fortnight from May to September. 

    Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
