They're feeding on something or they would have gone outside to your pear tree.
once when we had them, the majority were in the kitchen because if the light, I assume.
We eventually found the source a banana skin behind the sofa at the other side of the house!
I've no idea how it got there, but we had had a toddler invasion a while before
    In London. Keen but lazy.

You don't want them in the kitchen or sharing your glass of wine.

For goodness sake, how much is something that size going to drink?  Though, now you mention it, I've never known a fruit fly to get a round in.
  • Well my pear tree is going in my compost bin. I'm sure that's where they are coming from. I have nothing rotting searched my kitchen everywhere.
  • The cider vinigar trap is working as when I inspected it there were about 6 in there this morning.
  • It seems to be tragic to blame the pear tree and compost it, I'm not convinced it's the problem unless you have a lot of rotting fruit on or around the tree and that is infested too.
They tend to be attracted to sources of CO2 ie. fermentation. The detective in me is thinking something has fermented whilst you were on vacation. It may not smell to you.
Once hatched they will spread and look for more pleasantries. As I said earlier, they will soon be gone as the seasons progress and carry on with the traps.
