I have had loads of tomatoes grow beautifully then the weather in Cornwall turned wet.I pick them when just turning yellowish and put them in drawers with bananas.A few days later nice firm ripe tommies. They certainly taste better kept out of the fridge.
Keeping toms in the fridge will keep them fresher for longer. The downside is the flavour (and often texture) is much degraded and does not recover when brought back to room temp. The only time I put toms in the fridge is when I buy them in winter. They turn to mush in a few days is left at room temp, and as they have very little flavour to start with, there's not much to loose Only 4-5 weeks and it'll be back to shop-bought for fresh toms for another 9 months

Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.
But tom's are a year round thing. October / November clean out greenhouse, December/January choose seeds , February/ March plant seeds, March/April get seedlings going and big enough to plant out in greenhouse May, then June( if lucky) July August September and even October harvest. Its a full year doing this growing thing!😅😁
That's a more positive outlook A first taste of autumn chill here today, so not long before it's choosing seeds of all sorts soon. I'll spend most of October with a sore back as I'll have my usual 4 ton of horse-gold to shift up the garden and spread on the beds

Tried cutting back some shrubs today, got half way along and had to give up the hands to elbows had got heavy and started to go numb. Am missing the hubby's help this year as he is waiting for a shoulder op.
Thank you everyone for your advice, all sound. In the event I brought the tomatoes with us in the camper and they ripened beautifully in 5 days ( I couldn’t bear to have to buy tomatoes here in France, ditto potatoes, beans, sweet corn and courgettes which I also brought with us). Against all advice I put them in the fridge so they wouldn’t deteriorate and brought a few out ahead of lunch today. I’m afraid your advice was correct, the skin was soft and the flavour lacking, however at least they look perfect!
